We all gain weight at some point in our lives, but there are some circumstances that make you gain weight faster than you’d like to admit. I’m going to go over the ten most common bad habits that make you gain weight. By the end of this article, you’ll be able to check them off your list and start forming better habits for a healthier life!
Habit #1: Emotional Eating
Emotional eating is a very common habit in our society. When you go through a breakup, it’s not uncommon to wallow in your sorrow and eat a tub of ice cream. We’ve seen it in media and in real life. Instead of letting your emotions get the best of you, take a nice, long, calming walk to ease your nerves and get some fresh air. It will settle your mind, help you stay active, and distract you from eating your feelings away.
Habit #2: Boredom Eating
When people are bored, they tend to get snaky. Mindlessly eating when you’re not really hungry isn’t a good habit at all, however, and can lead to unnecessary weight gain. Instead, try chewing sugar-free gum or going for a nice walk when boredom tries to strike you down.
Habit #3: Convenience Eating
We all do it. You’re out running errands, hunger strikes, and that bag of chips at the gas station is looking real nice. However, that bag of chips can cause a lot of weight gain in the long-run. Try to plan ahead and throw some carrot sticks or apple slices in your bag before you go out so you always have something healthy on hand.
Habit #4: Grocery Shopping on an Empty Stomach
Always eat a small snack before leaving for the grocery store. If you shop on an empty stomach, hunger can make you buy food you would never buy otherwise. Stick to your list, keep your hunger at bay, and don’t fall prey to that attractive display of snack cakes.
Habit #5: Skipping Breakfast
Skipping breakfast slows your metabolism and makes it harder to burn calories throughout the day. Try to eat at least a small breakfast to kickstart your day and lose more pounds!
Habit #6: Drinking Soda or Juice Instead of Water
Believe it or not, your weight gain could be caused by drinking all of your calories! Soda and juice contain copious amounts of sugar and calories, and drinking them with every meal can pack on the pounds when you don’t even realize it. Replace sugary drinks with water to save your figure!
Habit #7: Not Planning Your Meals
When you don’t plan your meals, you may tend to go for the quick and easy options instead of healthier ones. Try to plan your meals for the day so you can make sure that you are getting the nutrients you need at the calorie level you want.
Habit #8: Not Drinking Enough Water
Many people confuse hunger for thirst. Whenever you get an urge to snack on unhealthy foods, drink a big glass of water and wait a few minutes to see if your hunger subsides.
Habit #9: Eating Too Fast
Experts say that it takes about fifteen minutes after a meal to feel full. Therefore, if you eat too quickly and feel hungry right after, you may pile on seconds and add snacks that will double your calorie intake. Try to drink a big glass of water with every meal so you can slow down, enjoy your food, and let your stomach settle.
Habit #10: Not Moving Enough
A sedentary lifestyle leads to weight gain in many individuals. Regardless of the foods you eat, if you don’t get up and move you won’t burn off the calories. Try to aim for at least thirty minutes to an hour of activity a day to cut down on your time spent sitting down.
Take each habit one step at a time. It’s difficult to kick these bad habits because you’ve likely done a number of them without thinking about it! You have to form a pattern of healthy eating to truly make progress on your weight loss, but I hope that this article has given you a good starting point. Hang in there and you will start seeing results in no time!
